Timing Is Everything… And cost.

Pizza Hut UK has spent £18 million in a rebranding exercise that has punters and pundits howling. Pizza Hut launched its first restaurant in Britain 35 years ago, selling… pizzas.  The chain is has now temporarily naming 30 of its branches Pasta Hut because, according to boss Alasdair Murdoch, pasta is 3 or 4 percent of sales, and he’s confident that in a few weeks that will rise to 10 percent.

In how many ways can this seen to be counter productive. Let me count them:

1.   In the month where the capitalist world is going to hell in a handbasket, a fast food chain is seen to be spending £18 million on a rather tenuous rebrand . No matter where you are, and what the value of your currency, this is a huge amount of money.

2.  The change is ‘temporary.’ What, can the company already see it’s  problematic? It doesn’t ooze confidence.

3.  For 4% of sales, in an attempt to raise product sales to 10%, they spent… I’ll say it again… £18 million.

4.  Pizza is harder to make at home than pasta.

5.  The company is seeking feedback from customers regarding the name change. Why not just run a competition.

6. The grammar on the website banner is appalling. Surely it should be “Pasta’s so good, we’re changing our name!” or “Pasta so good, we’re changing our name!’

You can check out the the changes, and cast a vote as to whether  they should stay or not, here.

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing

Here in Australia we don’t have this Wendy’s. We have this Wendy’s.

The first Wendy’s is an American fast food chain who has a product called The Baconator. It’s got 51grams of fat. But that’s not the point. The point is you can go to the Wendy’s website and find ALL the nutritional info you’d ever want in the Personalize It section.

It’s hours of fun and entertainment. Add some fries and a shake, take off the tomato and lettuce from your burger and see the nutritional fallout at a glance.

So for the hell of it, I “Personalzed” a Baconator, medium fries, a chocolate chip cookie, and a small ~ I repeat small ~ Chocolate Fudge Frosty™ Shake. Not unreasonable for a long car journey I would have thought.

The results:
95grams of fat, of which 37grams is saturated.
3010mg of sodium
1960 calories
and a whopping 8 grams of dietary fibre.

The International Federation of Competitive Eating lists the the top 50 international record holders on its site.
Only two women. What’s with that? Sonya Thomas, a 105 pound (48 kilos for those in metric land), 40 year old from Virginia can scoff 11 pounds (5 kilos) of cheesecake in 9 minutes, 65 hard boiled eggs in 6 minutes 40 seconds, and 46 DOZEN, yes, dozen, oysters in 10 minutes. She’s ranked 6th in the world.

And coming in at number 10, is Juliet Lee, 42 also weighing in at a massive 105 pounds. Juliet is a Ninjing University chemistry professor and currently resides in Maryland. Her records include 13.23 pounds (over 6 kilos) of Jellied Cranberry Sauce, and Ultimate Eating Tournament (Various Foods): 7 Chicken Wings, 1 lb of Nachos, 3 Hot Dogs, 2 Personal Pizzas, 3 Italian Ices/Broaday at the Beach / 7 minutes, 13 seconds/April 19, 2008.

Other than these two lovely ladies, the sport (?) seems massively underrepresented by women.
